According to the UN, ignoring the causes of forced migration, demanding a regional “alignment” and pushing for building a border wall in the United States, does not address the cause of the problem and does not change people´s decision to leave their home.
Achim Steiner, administrator of the UN Development Program (UNDP), stated during the debate on the Mexico borderline barrier, that the migratory flow will remain active as long as its causes remain unattended.
The Brazilian-German environmentalist said during a visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that stopping people on the border represents a limitation when the core reasons of the issue are not attended.
According to the high commissioner, President Donald Trump’s administration is not only designing the construction of the controversial wall, but it is basing its Central America investment policy on whether or not these countries are willing to collaborate with it.
The environmentalist warned that those so-called aids based on financial arrangements could also be a double-edged sword.
He pointed out that what it is certain is the difficulty for desperate people to move from one place to another, either for reasons of poverty or conflict.
