On February 5, “the truth” from the Congress will be heard when the President of the United States, Donald Trump address the State of the Union traditional speech.
Mr. Trump accepted the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi´s invitation to deliver his speech a week after January 29.
There is great expectation about the rhetorical elements that the president will use in the context of one of the most important political events of the nation, considering the postponement suggested by the Lower Chamber. He said on Twitter that Mrs. Pelosi had cancelled the State of the Union speech “because she doesn’t want to hear the truth”.
The Government shutdown affected the normal official activities and the development of this event of 229 years of tradition. It was initially delivered by President George Washington on January 8 in 1790, in New York City, when it was the provisional capital of the country.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, addressed the president. “When I wrote to you on January 23, I stated that we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has reopened to schedule this year’s State of the Union address”.
Pelosi made reference to a conversation with Trump at an early hour on Monday in which they agreed on February 5 as the day to hold this political act before the plenary session of both houses of the US Congress.
Donald Trump’s response to the acceptance of the proposal was immediately forwarded to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Last week Trump announced that he would postpone his annual speech on the State of the Union until the end of the Government Shutdown which happened last Friday 25.
“I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over. I am not looking for an alternative location.” There’s “no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber”. He wrote on Twitter.
However, previously he had a politically abrupt movement when he assured that he was in the search of an alternative.
In the middle of the political tension between the Executive and the Legislative, President Trump said that the State of the Union had been canceled by Nancy Pelosi “because she doesn’t want to hear the truth”.
During the days of the impasse Trump said that after accepting the speech postponement, Pelosi had asked him to give it ” as the Shutdown was going on” but” she then changed her mind (…)suggesting a later date”.
Following Pelosi’s suggestion to postpone the traditional speech, Trump replied by canceling her a trip to Afghanistan.
