The Mueller submission to the court regarding General Michale Flynn, who served as a key Trump’s foreign policy aide, was heavily edited to protect information that the special counsel will probably use later. What Mueller has stated is that he wants Flynn not to serve a prison term because the general has been so helpful. In fact Flynn helped the prosecutor from the start and has met with him at least 19 times providing information and documentation. What the experts are saying now is that Trump should be worried about the word “substantial” regarding Flynn’s testimony.
Mueller’s probe is centered on a probe of Russian interference in the US. election of 2016. The Russian interference may have given Trump an advantage and he might have known about the more than 30 thousand emails of Hillary Clinton. But Flynn, may have known more about the dealings with the Russians and perhaps even about the TrumpTower meeting that has a called the special counsel’s attention. Flynn had business ties with Russia and Turkey. He pleaded guilty a year ago and had his sentencing date postponed as he kept providing more and more information. Unlike Papadopoulos, who Trump said was someone of no importance, Flynn played a big role in the Trump administration. In spite of Trumps’ denials there is reason to believe that Flynn, Manafort and Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen have given the Special Counsel enough information that will move the investigation forward.
All indications are that there are more indictments coming down as the special counsel is getting ready to submit his final report. In the meantime, because he is submitting court filings, it becomes more difficult for Trump and his appointee at the Justice Department, Matthew Whitaker to remove Mueller at this point. That would be a clear obstruction of justice.
