On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, The Pan American Association of Philadelphia hosted its annual Pan American Day and Annual Scholarship Luncheon at The Union League of Philadelphia. This remarkable event gathered over 200 policymakers and leaders from diverse sectors in the Greater Philadelphia region to commemorate Pan-Americanism and extend support to the next generation of scholars.
The proceedings commenced with opening remarks by Ruben Reyes, President of the organization, setting the tone for a day brimming with recognition and celebration of academic excellence and dedication to Latin American studies. Leading the Presentation of Scholarships and Awards was Dr. Ronald Webb, guiding the audience through the heartwarming ceremony where nearly $20,000 in college scholarships were bestowed upon deserving area university students majoring in Latin American and related studies.
Among the distinguished scholarships awarded were the Alejandro Reyes Scholarship, the Irene Rivera Diaz Scholarship, the Carmelita Manning Community Service Scholarship, and the Janice Bond Senior Awards. These scholarships stand as tributes to individuals who have left indelible marks on the Latino community and serve as beacons of hope for students committed to academic excellence and community service.
Eder Ruiz Sanchez, a first-generation student at Swarthmore College, was the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Alejandro Reyes Scholar. His fervent passion for social change and tireless dedication to bridging personal experiences with global frameworks earned him this honor. With a double-major in Sociology/Anthropology and Spanish, Eder’s academic pursuits reflect his deep-rooted commitment to understanding and uplifting Latinx communities, particularly focusing on resilience amid adversity.
Jasmine Guaillasaca Quizhpi, a rising third-year student at the University of Pennsylvania, was lauded as the 2024 Irene Rivera Diaz Scholar for her unwavering advocacy for Indigenous rights and immigration issues, particularly within Andean communities. Her academic journey underscores her dedication to amplifying marginalized voices and fostering inclusive dialogue.
Shanea Higgin, a student at the University of Delaware, was awarded the esteemed 2024 Carmelita Manning Community Service Scholarship for her visionary approach to education and community engagement. Shanea’s dedication to serving the Latino community through educational initiatives and grassroots activism exemplifies the spirit of public service and social responsibility.
Additionally, the Janice Bond Senior Awards were presented to outstanding graduating seniors from area colleges and universities, recognizing their exceptional academic achievements and active involvement in advancing Latin American Studies and community engagement efforts. This year’s recipients were; Giselle Vigil, Swarthmore College, Ashauna Francis, The College of New Jersey, Violet Lange, Temple University, Alec Mettin, Saint Joseph’s University, Rida Memon, Drexel University, Natalie Schirmacher, Villanova University, Dayanna Salas, University of Pennsylvania and Gabrielle Nye, Widener University.
The keynote address, delivered by Hon. P. Michael McKinley, Former United States Ambassador to Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Afghanistan, resonated deeply with the audience. Ambassador McKinley’s speech underscored the importance of optimism and opportunity in Latin America, emphasizing the region’s economic potential, environmental initiatives, and evolving political landscape.
Amidst global challenges and transformations, Ambassador McKinley urged for enhanced U.S. engagement and cooperation with Latin America, emphasizing the region’s significance as an economic partner and cultural ally. He emphasized the need for increased investment in educational exchanges and youth empowerment initiatives to nurture the next generation of leaders committed to fostering understanding and cooperation across the Americas.
Romulo L. Diaz, Jr., Chair of the Board of the Pan American Association of Philadelphia, expressed profound gratitude for the support of Ambassador McKinley and the unwavering dedication of area university students to Latin American studies and community service.
