District Attorney Larry Krasner on Friday issued the following statement on the passing of District Attorney’s Office (DAO) Detective and former Philadelphia Police Officer Jerry Torres:
“Philadelphia has lost a fine detective and lifelong public servant. Detective Torres has served the District Attorney’s Office with distinction since 2013. He was assigned to the Felony/Trials Unit, and was also detailed to the Dangerous Drug Offender Unit to assist with investigations. He joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 1994, following service to our nation as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
“In addition to serving our city and nation with honor and integrity, Jerry was a warm and loving husband to his wife, Maria, and father to their daughter, Sofia. His life was fulfilling and exciting even when he wasn’t doing criminal investigative work whether cheering on his beloved FC Barcelona, or making the most incredible empanadas at La Caleñita Bakery and Café, which he operated on North 5th Street with Maria.
“The officers, attorneys, and staff of the DAO honor Detective Jerry Torres’ life of service, mourn his loss to our city and nation, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. A Police and Fire Federal Credit Union memorial fund will be established for his daughter, 12-year-old Sofia Iris Tascon Torres
“At Maria’s request, we are sharing a personal photograph of Detective Torres that captures his love of family, sports, and laughter. May his memory be a blessing.”
