The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup is the eighth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. 24 women’s national teams representing member associations of FIFA took part in the month long event. This coming Sunday July 6th the final two teams will vie for the cup. The USA qualified for the final after defeating England 2-1. France played host to the competition between 7 June and 7 July 2019, with matches staged at nine cities. In March 2015, France won the right to host the event; the first time the country is hosting the tournament, and the third time by a European nation. The United States entered the competition as the defending champion and the favorite to win in 2019. The USA will face the Netherlands who defeated Sweden to reach the final game at the Lyon Olympic Stadium.
The women’s tournament turned out to be one of the most interesting futbol competitions of the season. There were other matches taking place around the same dates in Brazil that also garnered attention due to the participation of international stars like Leonel Messi, Edinson Cavani , James, and Luis Suarez in the Copa America. In a classic encounter between Brazil and Argentina, the host country won the match 2-0 and Messi will be competing with his team for third place. A curious note is the absence of Megan Rapinoe, one of the stars of the U.S. team. She has been controversial for what many consider anti-American comments, but the official explanation for her absence from the field was an injured hamstring. Rapinoe’s substitute, Christen Press, scored in the game against England. The U.S. proved that it has a deep bench, and the players are optimistic about the final outcome. They will face the Netherlands, ranked eighth in the world. Go USA!
