We must point out in advance that we firmly believe that women soccer players in the United States should be paid more because they have played as champions on the fubol field, attracting large audiences who have paid enormous sums to watch them play. If there was any doubt about being able to attract people to the stadiums, in the two recent women’s cups we could see that they did better than the men’s team that could not qualify for the world cup in Russia.
That said, it is surprising that there is controversy regarding the use of certain words. A headline that announced: “United States, master of soccer”, apparently caused consternation in certain areas, especially in the social networks of Colombia. Maybe those fans had no reason to celebrate and if they had the chance to rain on the victorious team’s celebration. Well, first of all we must stop finding something offensive in the affirmations of many people. Then, we must see that Spanish is much more respectful in terms of gender than English. We use jugador and the jugadora, arquero y arquera when in English there is no distinction. But the objections go beyond language. Many are complaining at this time about the behavior of the young women who participated on behalf of the United States.
It is said that they celebrated with great enthusiasm the goals, the partial victories and finally the championship match that gave them victory for the second time in a row. And the complaints extend to some players like Megan Rapinoe for her defiant attitude towards the authorities. These champions are going to have to mature and understand that the platform of their fame does not require that they comment on every issue. But we agree that they should be paid equal to or better than the men’s team.
