Pennsylvania Department Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said Tuesday that Governor Wolf’s recommendation that school sports should not be played until at least January 1, 2021 will keep its recommendation status.
Her words mean that the decision on whether or not high school sports will continue in the fall is now in the hands of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA).
Levine clarified that there is not a mandate concerning the reopening date of fall sports. “The governor has been very clear about that. He has no plans to do that.”
The PIAA Board of Governors will meet this Friday with the intention of reaching a conclusive decision on this situation that has caused uncertainty for both school districts and athletes.

Some leagues have already moved the start of training to September. However, this circumstance could be different for practices in other leagues if the PIAA decides to proceed with the fall sports calendar.
Although the governor has put the decision in the hands of the PIAA, this does not generate changes in their position regarding the activation of the school sports.
“The recommendation from the governor and myself is that all school sports be postponed until January 1, and that would include school sports, but also recreational and club sports. So, I think the governor has been very clear about this recommendation, and we have been consistent in terms of how we’re describing it and that continues to be out recommendation,” Levine stated.
