Dan Rather–has written a new book-”What Unites Us” in which he writes that we are in danger of moving from nationalism into tribalism.” He cites as an example the fact that during this presidency we are more deeply divided. Well, racism has not only notion away following the Obama years, Trump has managed to use deep seated frustrations from a segment of the population to attack immigrants, his Democratic opposition, and in one recent episode, women in Congress who dared to challenge him.
Our government is being led by a captain who seems ignorant of the means to keep us afloat. A captain who will ignore sound advice because he only believes in his own counsel.
“We can get through this period only if we concentrate on the things that unite us, and not the things that divide us,” wrote Rather, but this president only looks to divide. He has revived old fears when immigrants felt persecuted. He continues to insist on building his “beautiful wall,” telling his followers that the wall is the answer to illegal immigration.
“The Immigration Reform Act of 1965, with the elimination of the quota system removed fear from the national discussion on immigration,” said Rather. But Trump said Mexico sent us criminals and used the word caravan to describe the immigrants from Honduras falsely stating that terrorists would infiltrate with them. The threat of that caravan was used to send troops to the border and to create more detention centers where thousands are kept up to this day. By creating the impression that all immigrants coming from the south are different than the rest of us, Trump caters to that tribalism mentioned by Dan Rather. His answer: “We must listen to one another as difficult as that may be”.
