He said he has stayed away from the media but “frankly it didn’t work very well.” And his first press conference after the midterm elections didn’t work so well either. Republicans keep control of the U.S. senate but the House is now in the hands of the Democratic Party. Trump minimized the losses, preferring to discuss the numerous victories in governorships. Florida, Georgia, Ohio were wins for Republicans. Trump takes credit for the victory in Ohio. “I was very well received by the people in this country,” was another one of his odd statements contradicting the opinions of many policial commentators who consider the loss of the House a very strong message from the voters that the president is taking this country on the wrong path. Responding angrily to some of the questions from the press, Trump renewed his criticism that the press prints or publishes “fake news.” He said that he would be happy to cooperate with Nanci Pelosi and the Democrats and that if there is no significant legislation he will blame the Democrats. He refused to admit that the loss of the House is a defeat for him. On the other hand Nanci Pelosi pledged cooperation for the good of the country. “I want to create jobs from sea to shining sea,” said Pelosi. Trump said Republicans who lost their seats, lost because they didn’t embrace him. He blames retirements and the media for the loss of the House. Trump will be facing subpoenas from different committees now that the Democrats will have the chairmanships. He said that he can play the same game. So, we should prepare for more of the same acrimony and nastiness. One clear result of Trump’s antagonism towards women is that a record number of women will join Congress in January.
