In a significant step towards bolstering support for survivors of domestic violence, Women Against Abuse, Inc., Philadelphia’s foremost domestic violence agency, proudly unveils the completion of a $3.6 million renovation and expansion project for one of Philadelphia’s only domestic violence emergency shelters. The achievement was marked with a poignant ribbon-cutting ceremony and an illuminating tour of the refurbished facility.
Eminent figures including NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent, multifaceted personality Tommi Vincent, and Joanna Otero-Cruz, Executive Director of Women Against Abuse, congregated to celebrate the milestone. This momentous occasion signifies not just a physical transformation but a reaffirmation of commitment towards supporting those in need.
Elected officials, board members, donors, and advocates joined hands to ceremoniously inaugurate Ameya’s Place, a sanctuary that annually provides solace to over 600 women, men, and children. The ribbon-cutting ceremony served as a reminder of the collaborative effort required to combat domestic violence and offer refuge to its survivors.
With testimonials shared by individuals like Jamie Colleen Miller, a former resident and now a Board Member for Women Against Abuse, and heartfelt words from William Spratley, father of Ameya Spratley, after whom the shelter is named, the event was not just about infrastructure but about the lives it touches and the stories it shelters.

Ameya’s Place, one of the two emergency safe havens operated by Women Against Abuse, stands as a beacon of hope for those fleeing abusive relationships. The organization’s steadfast commitment to providing refuge, support, and advocacy has made it a cornerstone in the fight against domestic violence in Philadelphia.
The renovation, initiated in January 2023 and executed in phases to ensure uninterrupted operation, encompasses a spectrum of enhancements. From structural upgrades like flooring, lighting, and HVAC systems to essential amenities such as private bathrooms and revamped children’s services spaces, every aspect of the shelter has been meticulously revitalized to better serve its residents.

Of particular significance is the addition of four new resident rooms, a move that augments the shelter’s capacity to accommodate more individuals seeking safety and support. This expansion addresses a critical need, evidenced by the unfortunate reality that 88 individuals were turned away in Fiscal Year 2023 due to space constraints.

The refurbishment of the commercial kitchen, the heart of the shelter, underscores the holistic approach adopted by Women Against Abuse. Ensuring that residents receive nutritious meals is not just about sustenance but about nurturing their physical and emotional well-being.
As Women Against Abuse looks towards the future, this renovation stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication to the cause. With a renewed vigor and enhanced capabilities, Ameya’s Place is poised to continue its mission of providing sanctuary, support, and empowerment to survivors of domestic violence.
