Ginóbili, campeón olímpico con Argentina y uno de los mejores jugadores de la NBA nacidos fuera de Estados Unidos, encabeza la clase de 2022 anunciada el sábado por el Salón de la Fama.

La ceremonia de ingreso del grupo tendrá lugar el fin de semana del 9 y 10 de septiembre en Springfield (Massachusetts).

El argentino, que jugó toda su carrera en la NBA con los San Antonio Spurs, será apenas el quinto latinoamericano, hombre o mujer, en ser inmortalizado en esta institución tras los brasileños Oscar Schmidt, Maciel Pereira y Hortencia Marcari y el panameño John Isaacs.

“Aunque uno nunca se entrena o compite en búsqueda de premios individuales, y los más bonitos y significativos son siempre grupales, que te reconozcan de esta manera cuatro años después del retiro es un increíble halago”, reconoció Ginóbili en una rueda de prensa en San Antonio (Texas).

“Empecé a jugar basquetbol en Bahía Blanca, en Argentina, y ni siquiera consideraba que esto pudiera ser una meta”, recordó.

El escolta, líder de la asombrosa selección argentina que logró el oro en Atenas-2004, militó entre 2002 y 2018 en los San Antonio Spurs, con los que se proclamó cuatro veces campeón (2003, 2005, 2007 y 2014) formando un memorable trío con Tim Duncan y Tony Parker a las órdenes del técnico Gregg Popovich.

“Si voy a estar en el Salón de la Fama en septiembre es por haber sido parte de ese equipo, de esa generación (argentina) que logró tantas cosas y en paralelo con una organización tan exitosa como los Spurs”, agradeció Ginóbili, de 44 años.

“He sido muy afortunado de ser parte de esos dos equipos icónicos“, subrayó.

‘Manu’, cuyo número 20 fue retirado en 2019 por los Spurs, fue seleccionado para dos Juegos de las Estrellas (2005 y 2011), obtuvo el premio al Mejor Sexto Hombre en 2008 y se despidió de la NBA con un total de 14.043 puntos, 4.001 asistencias, 3.697 rebotes y 1.392 robos.

La mentalidad Ginóbili

Ginóbili dejó su huella en la NBA gracias a su excepcional talento, creatividad en el pase y un feroz espíritu competitivo en la cancha.

Pese a sus excepcionales méritos individuales, Ginóbili tuvo la humildad para asumir el papel de sexto hombre cuando se le requirió.

Ante los medios, luciendo una camiseta con el logo de los Spurs, el argentino insistió el sábado en que la virtud fundamental de un jugador es su capacidad para mejorar al equipo.

“Hacer las cosas como corresponde, por el bien común, no solo por el reconocimiento individual. Esa es la mentalidad que siempre tuve en mi carrera y que recomendaría a un chico que recién empieza”, expuso.

“Yo no era un predestinado. Tuve que trabajar mucho dentro y fuera de la cancha”, recalcó el argentino, quien fue elegido en un lejano puesto 57 del Draft de 1999.

“Creo que terminó siendo una muy linda historia del que viene acá a remarla con un montón de sueños pero también incertidumbres”, se felicitó.

Un oro “incomparable”

Además de su exitosa carrera en la NBA, Ginóbili fue también la mayor figura de la Generación Dorada que alcanzó el primer oro olímpico en básquetbol para el país, en Atenas-2004.

Con 29 puntos de Ginóbili, Argentina asombró al mundo en aquellos Juegos al eliminar en semifinales a Estados Unidos, donde competían estrellas como LeBron James o su entonces compañero Tim Duncan, y derrotar después en la final a Italia.

“Es muy difícil comparar aquel logro con otra cosa porque no se suponía que teníamos que estar ahí”, rememoró.

“Lograr ese tipo de reconocimiento con un grupo de amigos que han jugado juntos durante muchos años y que básicamente han crecido juntos, es algo incomprensible. No hay palabras que puedan hacer justicia a ese sentimiento”, afirmó el escolta, que también conquistó un bronce olímpico en los Juegos de Pekín-2008.

Tras su retirada en 2018, Ginóbili se tomó tres años prácticamente sabáticos y el pasado septiembre se reincorporó a los Spurs en un rol de asesor en el que dijo hacer “un poquito de todo”.

“Estoy tratando de estar cerca de los jugadores, porque son un equipo joven y con poca experiencia, pero también de aprender del otro lado”, dijo en referencia al cuerpo técnico y dirigencia.

“No tengo un objetivo clarísimo como ser entrenador o GM (mánager general). Para nada. Estoy viviendo el día a día, contento. Por suerte no necesito salir a buscar algo inmediatamente”, aseguró.

Para ser seleccionado al panteón del basquetbol, ‘Manu’ necesitaba recibir al menos 18 de los 24 votos del Comité de los Honores, formado por miembros del Salón de la Fama, ejecutivos, periodistas y otros expertos.

Otras figuras elegidas para la Clase 2022 del Salón de la Fama son los ex jugadores Tim Hardaway, figura de los Warriors y los Heat de la NBA, y Swin Cash, tres veces campeona de la WNBA y dos veces medallista de oro olímpica.

The induction ceremony will take place the weekend of September 9-10 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Argentine, who played his entire NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs, will be only the fifth Latin American, male or female, to be immortalized in this institution after Brazilians Oscar Schmidt, Maciel Periera and Hortencia Marcari and Panamanian John Isaacs.

“Although one never trains or competes in search of individual awards, and the most beautiful and significant ones are always in groups, to be recognized in this way four years after retirement is an incredible compliment,” Ginóbili acknowledged at a press conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The Emanuel Ginobili mentality

Ginobili made his mark on the NBA thanks to his exceptional talent, creative passing and fierce competitive spirit on the court.

Despite his exceptional individual merits, Ginobili had the humility to assume the role of sixth man when he was required.

Before the media, wearing a shirt with the Spurs logo, the Argentine insisted on Saturday that the fundamental virtue of a player is his ability to improve the team.

“Do things properly, for the common good, not just for individual recognition. That’s the mentality I always had in my career and that I would recommend to a guy who is just starting out,” he said.

“I was not predestined. I had to work a lot on and off the court,” stressed the Argentine, who was chosen a distant 57th in the 1999 Draft.

“I think it ended up being a very nice story of the one who comes here to row it with a lot of dreams but also uncertainties,” he congratulated himself.

‘Unparalelled’ gold

In addition to his successful career in the NBA, Ginobili was also the greatest figure of the Golden Generation that reached the first Olympic gold in basketball for the country, in Athens 2004.

With 29 points from Ginobili, Argentina amazed the world at those Games by eliminating the United States in the semifinals, where stars like LeBron James or his then-teammate Tim Duncan competed, and later defeating Italy in the final.

“It’s very hard to compare that accomplishment to anything else because we weren’t supposed to be there,” he recalled.

“Achieving that kind of recognition with a group of friends who have played together for many years and who have basically grown up together is something incomprehensible. There are no words that can do justice to that feeling,” said the shooting guard, who also won a bronze Olympian at the 2008 Beijing Games.

After his retirement in 2018, Emanuel Ginobili practically took a three-year sabbatical and last September he rejoined the Spurs in an advisory role in which he said he does “a little bit of everything.”

“I’m trying to be close to the players, because they are a young team with little experience, but also to learn from the other side,” he said, referring to the coaching staff and management.

“I don’t have a very clear objective like being a coach or GM (general manager). Not at all. I’m living day to day, happy. Luckily I don’t need to go out and look for something immediately,” he assured.

To be selected to the basketball pantheon, “Manu” needed to receive at least 18 of the 24 votes of the Honors Committee, made up of Hall of Fame members, executives, journalists and other experts.

Other figures chosen for the Hall of Fame Class of 2022 are former players Tim Hardaway, a figure of the NBA Warriors and Heat, and Swin Cash, a three-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist.
