As reported by 6abc, the suspect taken into custody in South Jersey after opening fire on officers in Philadelphia has been identified as Arthur Henry Disanto Jr., a 41-year-old man who was wanted for attempted homicide.

Disanto Jr.´s manhunt lasted several hours on Monday night. It ended just before 12 a.m. when a gun battle ensued between Disanto Jr. and officers in Washington Township. The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he is expected to survive.

Sources have confirmed that a police officer was also shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries while trying to apprehend the man.

The incident started around 7 p.m. in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Police spotted Disanto crashing a motorcycle along the 8400 block of Lindbergh Avenue in Philadelphia early Monday evening.

As police approached him, the man allegedly fired shots at the officers. He then got off the motorcycle and stole an unmarked police vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, investigators said. He then drove off.

The man fled Folcroft police officers, but he was later stopped by on the 8400 block of Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia.

Hard to catch

According to authorities, as investigators approached, the man opened fire on Folcroft officers. He then got off the motorcycle and stole an unmarked police vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, investigators said. He then drove off. No officers were injured in the gunfire.

Police said the stolen vehicle had SWAT gear and two rifles inside.

He was able to get to Deptford, New Jersey where he escaped police officers for hours while armed with a personal weapon, tactical gear and a bulletproof vest that was allegedly stolen from the crouiser.

Police brought in a SWAT vehicle to search the neighborhoods before finally apprehending the suspect in Washington Township.

Court records show he has a long criminal history dating back to the 1990s. Disanto Jr. was wanted by both the FBI and Pennsylvania State Police for allegedly shooting a woman in her Media home on July 3. He has been charged with criminal attempted homicide and other counts for that incident.
