Philadelphia shone with the colors, sounds, and pride of the Latino community during the Hispanic Heritage Month Gala. Organized by Hispanic Media, with Jefferson as the title sponsor, the evening has become one of the most emblematic events on the city’s cultural and community calendar.

From the red carpet—where guests were greeted with glamour and enthusiasm—to the carefully designed spaces at Live! Music, gastronomy, and artistic expressions created a festive atmosphere blending pride in one’s roots with excitement for a future full of opportunity.

Born and raised in North Philadelphia, Edwin Desamour knows firsthand the challenges young people face in communities marked by violence and inequality. His story is a testimony of resilience, transformation, and social commitment. Having experienced both hardship and hope, he turned those lessons into a lifelong mission: to be a guide, mentor, and advocate for those walking the same paths he once traveled in his youth.

His professional journey reflects that commitment. Through his work with the Philadelphia Anti-Drug & Anti-Violence Network, Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR), and Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Edwin has devoted his voice and energy to juvenile justice and violence prevention. As coordinator of the Latin American Juvenile Justice Network, supported by the MacArthur Foundation, he trained leaders and provided young people with tools to make positive decisions, opening doors to opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

His visionary spirit led him to found MIMIC (Men in Motion in the Community), where he brought together men who, like him, had transformed their lives and shared the common goal of reducing violence and offering hope. One of his most notable achievements was the revitalization of Waterloo Playground, which went from being an abandoned space to becoming a safe and joyful refuge for neighborhood children.

Today, Edwin serves as Executive Director of The Lighthouse, where he continues his mission of empowering Philadelphia’s youth—leading by example and strengthening community bonds. In addition, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to open his own business in 2019, further consolidating his leadership across different fields.

Edwin Desamour is much more than a community leader. He is a man who rose from adversity to become a source of hope. Like a phoenix, he has emerged stronger, illuminating the lives of those around him through his example. His life is a powerful reminder that change is possible, and that greatness is measured by the ability to transform the lives of others.

Edwin Desamour: Executive Director The Lighthouse

Jacqueline C. Romero is a distinguished attorney whose career embodies leadership, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equity. She is currently a partner in the White Collar, Investigations & Compliance, and Securities Litigation practice groups at BakerHostetler in Philadelphia.

Her career reached a historic milestone in 2022 when she was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, becoming the first woman of color, the first LGBTQIA+ person, and the first woman nominated by a President and unanimously confirmed by the Senate to hold that position in the district’s history.

During her tenure as U.S. Attorney (2022–2025), Romero led one of the nation’s largest and most active offices. Under her leadership, the Violent Crimes Unit doubled in size and, through an innovative, data-driven approach, achieved a 40% reduction in violent crime across multiple communities.

Beyond strengthening law enforcement, she championed prevention and reentry initiatives, working closely with youth and historically marginalized communities. Her leadership also extended to civil rights advocacy, setting a national record for settlements against institutional lenders for discrimination and recovering millions of dollars in fraud and corruption cases.

Outside her institutional role, Romero has been a dedicated mentor and educator. She has taught at the National Institute for Judicial Defense and Temple University and has been an active leader in organizations including the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania, the LGBTQ Bar Association of Philadelphia, and the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA). Her community service has earned numerous honors, among them the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Award (2023) and the Fannie Bear Besser Award (2025).

A magna cum laude graduate of The College of New Jersey and a Juris Doctor from Rutgers University School of Law, Romero is distinguished by her blend of professional excellence and deep public service. Her legacy is that of a trailblazer who opens doors while fiercely defending justice, inclusion, and human dignity.

Jacqueline C. Romero: Partner at BakerHostetler and former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania

For Jannette Díaz, leadership can be defined as a return to her roots. Raised in North Philadelphia, the very streets she now walks as CEO of Congreso de Latinos Unidos are the same ones she knew in childhood. This visceral, emotional connection has allowed her to turn her work into a legacy of commitment. She is deeply dedicated to the city that helped her grow and to the people who supported her along the way.

With more than 25 years of experience, Jannette can confidently say she builds hope. Her true calling is transforming theory into action by creating high-performing programs that respond to the community’s real needs. Her history with Congreso is a full-circle journey—a “boomerang” that began in 2001 as director of the Girls Center, where she created safe spaces with a deep understanding of gender-based challenges, and ultimately led to her rise as Executive Director.

The path of someone so focused on community is filled with achievements, but also, in large measure, with challenges. Jannette has led federally qualified health centers and vital programs addressing HIV/AIDS and domestic violence; helping the vulnerable has always been a top priority. She began her career mentoring youth in the juvenile justice system, an experience that deepened her understanding of social justice.

Today, her influence extends well beyond Congreso’s walls. She serves on Governor Josh Shapiro’s Advisory Commission on Women and lends her expertise to several boards. Jannette amplifies Latino voices in circles of power. Yet her greatest role is as a guide to the community she serves and the family she has built—she is proudly a mother and grandmother. These personal titles have nurtured the compassion she brings to every initiative. Jannette Díaz embodies the cycle of care that transforms neighborhoods, generation after generation.

Some leaders measure their mark through reports and expansions—and then there is Antonio “Tony” Valdés. His presence in Philadelphia’s child behavioral-health community is less like that of an executive and more like an oak tree: rooted, protective, and witness to decades of unheard stories.

With a career devoted to exploring the meaning of community mental health, Valdés has been, above all, a steady figure for the city’s most vulnerable families. His journey began in 1987 on the front lines of direct social work at Connections CSP. That first-hand experience, which let him feel the true pulse of need, became the foundation for everything that followed.

It was almost a natural progression: after completing his master’s degree, he took on the role of Director of Operations, applying the practical wisdom of a provider to guide more than one hundred employees. But Philadelphia called with a greater urgency.

In 1995, he brought his conviction to the Child Psychiatry Center (CPC). There, his vision began to take on a community shape. He expanded services, diversified the team, and—crucially—raised the organization’s voice in North Philadelphia. It was then that the social worker began to evolve into the speaker and advocate the provider network truly needed.

His legacy, however, would be defined beginning in 1997, when he became Executive Director—and now CEO—of the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CCTC). With Tony at the helm, this nonprofit has become a sanctuary for children and families in crisis. His impact, recognized multiple times among the most influential Latinos, goes far beyond administration. It is the credibility forged over 36 years of practice, the same credibility that allows him to speak with authority to both legislators and a frightened teenager. Tony Valdés holds fast to his values with hope, reminding us that a child’s mental health is, in essence, the future of the community.

Antonio Valdés: CEO of Children’s Crisis Treatment Center

Varsovia Fernández, CEO of the Pennsylvania CDFI Network, has spent her life weaving networks. For twenty-five years, her career has been a loom where the corporate world, financial technology, and the nonprofit heart of Philadelphia intersect. She is an accomplished executive and, at the same time, an architect of connections who helps clients achieve not only business results but also discover their footprint in the community.

Her leadership is a combination of pragmatism and purpose. As a change agent committed to diversifying the business community, she is a recognized authority in Hispanic cultural, governmental, and educational circles. Credibility is part of her legacy. Varsovia stands out for her active and essential presence in the Greater Philadelphia ecosystem, dedicated to solving complex business challenges through a lens of social impact—a demanding task, but never an impossible one.

This vocation comes to life in boardrooms. Today, her guidance shapes institutions such as Montgomery County Community College, Rosemont College, and The Philadelphia Award, while influencing diversity policies on the Comcast National Joint Diversity Council. Previously, she chaired the Board of the Community College of Philadelphia, helping to expand access to education.

Her path is marked by major honors—from community and local awards to the Benemerenti Medal bestowed by Pope Francis—that go beyond accolades; they are symbols of her commitment, one that transcends the professional realm. Her education, spanning Rosemont College, Wharton, and Kellogg, provided the tools, but it was her civic vision that forged a legacy proving that business success and community contribution are two sides of the same coin.

Today, Varsovia serves as CEO of the Pennsylvania CDFI Network, a statewide collective of community development financial institutions whose mission is to provide affordable loans and technical assistance to businesses that cannot secure financing through traditional banks.

Varsovia Fernández: CEO of Pennsylvania CDFI Network
