Primary elections are held on the third Tuesday of May in most years. In presidential years they are held on the fourth Tuesday of April.

In a primary election, each political party selects its candidates to run for office during the general election. The candidates who get the highest number of votes in the primary election go on to run in the general election. Voters also vote for their party’s officers during a primary election.

In Pennsylvania, people can only vote for the candidates in the same political party they have named in the voter registration, not for both parties.

How to check registration and register to vote?

People can check their registration status online. If not, they can register to vote in the state online or in person.

Those who want to register to vote can do so by printing and filling out the Pennsylvania Voter Registration Application and submitting it to their county voter registration office. Voter registration in person is also possible at a county voter registration office or a PennDOT station.

On the other side, the final day to request a mail-in or absentee ballot is May 10.

It’s almost certain that Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania Attorney General, will be running for Governor for the Democrat party.

Tom Wolf, PA current Governor and also a Democrat, is constitutionally barred to run for a third consecutive term.

But things are not that clear on the Republican side. So far, seven candidates have filed for the Republican party primary elections. They are:

• Lou Barletta, GOP’s nominee for U.S. Senate in 2018 and a former congressman;
• Jake Corman, the top-ranking state senator;
• Joe Gale, a Montgomery County commissioner;
• State senator Doug Mastriano, a right-wing politician who aligned himself with Donald Trump;
• Bill McSwain, a lawyer who was the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in Philadelphia;
• Jason Richey, a Pittsburgh-based lawyer who specializes in commercial and contract litigation; and
• Dave White, a former Delaware County councilman.

The five o’clock deadline to file enough voter signatures to make Pennsylvania’s May 17 primary ballot also applies to races for lieutenant governor and Congress.

Both parties will have contested primaries for the U.S. Senate so far: four for the Democratic Party’s nomination and seven for the Republican Party’s candidancy, including Mehmet Oz, a.k.a. “Dr. Oz“, who will be running for the Republicans.
