From a vaccine shortage to doses about to expire. Things have changed a lot from a year ago in Delaware when it comes to availability of COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Delaware Division of Public Health (DDPH) delivered more than 2 million vaccine doses to their warehouse or directly to pharmacies. According to DDPH, almost 1,7M vaccine doses have been administered as of Friday 11 at 11:59 p.m., Bay to Bay News reported.

So, there are more than 300K COVID-19 vaccine doses available in the state, but there’s an issue: Some doses at the DDPH warehouse will expire soon. It remains unclear the status of vaccines shipped to pharmacies or communities.

More than 4,000 doses for youngsters in danger

DDPH spokeswoman Sharon Smith said there are 2,724 doses of the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12 and up with an expiration date of June 30; and 4,290 doses of Pfizer’s youth vaccine, for children between the ages of 5-11, which will expire on May 31.

There are also 2,880 doses of Moderna due to expire on May 17 and 730 of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine with an expiration date of April 11.

That’s why DDPH director Dr. Karyl Rattay said no one should have to wait for a vaccine dose or a booster shot.

“We’re very appreciative that many people patiently waited their turn last winter,” Dr. Rattay said. “But at this point, no one should worry if it’s your time to get a booster. Please get your booster. There’s plenty of vaccine available.”
