The league Unrivaled, co-founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, chose
Philadelphia as the first stop on its national tour. The 3-on-3 tournament, which debuted in
Miami in 2025, will be played on January 30 at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The league’s president, Alex Bazell, explained that choosing this city was a natural decision.
“Coming to Philadelphia — a historic place for sports and basketball — was an easy decision. This is the first time we are leaving Miami, and if we go somewhere, we are going to do it big. We are going to roll out the red carpet for Philadelphia fans,” he said.

Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, the first woman to lead the city, emphasized the importance of the
moment. “This is history in motion. Unrivaled not only gives players a court, it gives them
ownership and equity. Representation matters, and it’s no accident that this is happening here,
in a city of firsts.” Parker also issued a clear call to fans: “Unrivaled will be judged by how we fill
the stands. We have the responsibility to show that Philadelphia is ready.”

Councilmember Isaiah Thomas highlighted that Unrivaled’s arrival comes at a key moment for
economic justice. “Women’s sports revenues are at historic levels. It’s not just about how much
money is being generated, it’s about the share of profit. With a new WNBA contract on the
horizon, this is the time to demand that women be paid fairly.”

Excitement was also felt among local figures. Natasha Cloud, an Unrivaled player and St.
Joseph’s University alum, said returning home is special: “We’ve already sold about 5,000
tickets since the announcement, but that’s not enough. We need to sell out Xfinity Mobile Arena
and show why Philadelphia is the best sports city in the world.”

The event also highlighted the role of queer spaces in the rise of women’s sports. Chivonn
Anderson, owner of the new women’s sports bar Marsha’s, said: “I’m beyond excited and
inspired. In Philadelphia, when you give everything to your community, people respond. That
energy transforms the city — and we’re here to give it right back.”

The afternoon was filled with local pride, featuring artists like Tierra Whack, who encouraged
fans to “support each other and showcase women’s talent,” and honoring legends like Dawn
Staley, a living example of the power of women’s basketball in the city.

Unrivaled promises a new standard: minimum salaries of $100,000, equity stakes in the league
for all players, and top-level training conditions. For many athletes, it means no longer having to
travel overseas just to make a living.

On January 30, Philadelphia will once again host professional women’s basketball after 25

North Carolina couldn’t emulate their 1982 performance, when a 2-point shot from a young Michael Jordan gave Tar Hells the NCAA championship 63-62 against Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown Hoyas in the final seconds of the game.

The top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks trailed 40-25 at halftime against the eighth-seeded North Carolina at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

But a terrific second-half performance saw Kansas rock North Carolina to claim a dramatic victory and the Final Four title.

David McCormack and Jalen Wilson dragged the Jayhawks over the line with 15 points apiece as North Carolina was outscored 47-29 in a thrilling second half.

Kansas had lost by 16 points at one stage and appeared headed for defeat against a North Carolina team that had been chasing a seventh title after victories in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, and 2017.

Believe until the end

Kansas star McCormack revealed the Jayhawks had never given up hope despite a crushing halftime deficit.

“I was in the locker room at halftime smiling at my teammates, they thought I was crazy. I just said ‘Hey, we come here in the second half and have fun, do what we did to do what got us to this moment.’ McCormack said.

McCormack pushed Kansas to a 70-69 lead after grabbing a rebound with 1:16 remaining, then added another 2-pointer to put the Jayhawks ahead 72-69 with 22.3 seconds left.

There was still time for North Carolina’s Caleb Love to attempt a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the ball deflected harmlessly away from the target as Kansas erupted in celebrations.

The Jayhawks’ comeback eclipsed the previous high from 1998 when Kentucky overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat Utah.

Ginobili, an Olympic champion with Argentina and one of the best NBA players born outside the United States, heads the class of 2022 announced Saturday by the Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will take place the weekend of September 9-10 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Argentine, who played his entire NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs, will be only the fifth Latin American, male or female, to be immortalized in this institution after Brazilians Oscar Schmidt, Maciel Periera and Hortencia Marcari and Panamanian John Isaacs.

“Although one never trains or competes in search of individual awards, and the most beautiful and significant ones are always in groups, to be recognized in this way four years after retirement is an incredible compliment,” Ginóbili acknowledged at a press conference in San Antonio, Texas.

“I started playing basketball in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, and I didn’t even consider this to be a goal,” he recalled.

The shooting guard, leader of the amazing Argentine team that won gold in Athens 2004, played between 2002 and 2018 in the San Antonio Spurs, with whom he was proclaimed champion four times (2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014) forming a memorable trio with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker under coach Gregg Popovich.

“If I am going to be in the Hall of Fame in September, it is for having been part of that team, of that generation (Argentina) that achieved so many things and in parallel with an organization as successful as the Spurs,” 44 year-old Emanuel Ginobili thanked.

“I have been very fortunate to be a part of those two iconic teams,” he stressed.

‘Manu‘, whose number 20 was retired in 2019 by the Spurs, was selected for two All-Star Games (2005 and 2011), won the Best Sixth Man award in 2008 and left the NBA with a total of 14,043 points, 4,001 assists, 3,697 rebounds and 1,392 steals.

The Emanuel Ginobili mentality

Ginobili made his mark on the NBA thanks to his exceptional talent, creative passing and fierce competitive spirit on the court.

Despite his exceptional individual merits, Ginobili had the humility to assume the role of sixth man when he was required.

Before the media, wearing a shirt with the Spurs logo, the Argentine insisted on Saturday that the fundamental virtue of a player is his ability to improve the team.

“Do things properly, for the common good, not just for individual recognition. That’s the mentality I always had in my career and that I would recommend to a guy who is just starting out,” he said.

“I was not predestined. I had to work a lot on and off the court,” stressed the Argentine, who was chosen a distant 57th in the 1999 Draft.

“I think it ended up being a very nice story of the one who comes here to row it with a lot of dreams but also uncertainties,” he congratulated himself.

‘Unparalelled’ gold

In addition to his successful career in the NBA, Ginobili was also the greatest figure of the Golden Generation that reached the first Olympic gold in basketball for the country, in Athens 2004.

With 29 points from Ginobili, Argentina amazed the world at those Games by eliminating the United States in the semifinals, where stars like LeBron James or his then-teammate Tim Duncan competed, and later defeating Italy in the final.

“It’s very hard to compare that accomplishment to anything else because we weren’t supposed to be there,” he recalled.

“Achieving that kind of recognition with a group of friends who have played together for many years and who have basically grown up together is something incomprehensible. There are no words that can do justice to that feeling,” said the shooting guard, who also won a bronze Olympian at the 2008 Beijing Games.

After his retirement in 2018, Emanuel Ginobili practically took a three-year sabbatical and last September he rejoined the Spurs in an advisory role in which he said he does “a little bit of everything.”

“I’m trying to be close to the players, because they are a young team with little experience, but also to learn from the other side,” he said, referring to the coaching staff and management.

“I don’t have a very clear objective like being a coach or GM (general manager). Not at all. I’m living day to day, happy. Luckily I don’t need to go out and look for something immediately,” he assured.

To be selected to the basketball pantheon, “Manu” needed to receive at least 18 of the 24 votes of the Honors Committee, made up of Hall of Fame members, executives, journalists and other experts.

Other figures chosen for the Hall of Fame Class of 2022 are former players Tim Hardaway, a figure of the NBA Warriors and Heat, and Swin Cash, a three-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Among other distinctions, Horford was selected to the 2017-18 All-Defensive Second Team and the 2010-11 All-NBA Third Team.

For his career, Horford has played 786 games with Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks and holds averages 14.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 blocks in 32.8 minutes per game. In addition, a veteran of 120 career postseason games, Horford’s teams, have qualified for the playoffs in each of his 12 NBA seasons, dating back to 2007-08. The 12-year pro was originally selected by Atlanta as No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.

The Dominican had been the terror of the Sixers star, Joel Embiid, on each occasion they met. Now the context has changed and he will team up with the Cameroonian. “When he approached me, it felt right.
