¿Entrevistarla?”.

María del Pilar Morales is a “baby boomer” who grew up in the cradle of the “Hertzian waves”. She has been practicing the virtue of listening for more than twenty-five years. She recently interviewed the Vice President of the United States and told us without surprise or drama: “Kamala is just like us”.

God does not comfort us in deferred time. His love is always online for each one of us. He helps himself “En tus Mañanas”. Through the radio station’s program, many humble people in Philadelphia express their despairs and triumphs. The journalist of Puerto Rican descent knows that “despite the problems, family is family and love is love”.

In a world where everything is under “metrics,” doing the math was not difficult for the White House. Maria del Pilar is the Latino community voice in Philadelphia. Her poised vocal timbre, endowed with empowered femininity, reaches every home. She finds refuge in the listeners’ hearts. There, they treasure her. She is a matriarch who enjoys Washington’s recognition. That is why she was chosen.

People respond with the same empathy to those with a different touch. “When someone makes you feel the same, on the same level, that person is great.” The quotation marks correspond to an impression she had of Kamala Harris. That same perception, word for word, represents Maria del Pilar in every way. She graciously spoke with El Sol Latino and recounted her experience interviewing the Vice President.

“Kamala is just like us”

“When the station manager Marc Guralnick called me and said: we have a pending interview with Kamala Harris tomorrow, I said, what! Interview her?” This was the radio host’s reaction when she learned that the White House wanted her to interview the first female vice-president of the United States. Her astonishment was focused on many things: the language barrier, the personality´s importance, and the nerves that never leave any professional, no matter how experienced he or she may be.

You can read: Joanna Otero Cruz: “We have a lot of work to do with our Latino families”

The conversation went on: “Does she speak Spanish?” was the first thing I asked. But are you sure? She is the Vice President! “Yes, yes”, the manager answered. María del Pilar was full of praise for her colleagues at La Mega 105.7. “Why me? My colleagues speak better English!” However, her fate was written. She did not volunteer. She did not refuse. And from the labyrinths of her memory will not escape the “ring tone” which announced the telephonic connection between her and Kamala Harris.

María del Pilar Morales is convinced that Kamala is like us. “The Vice President requested the interview because she was going to announce the importance of getting vaccinated,” the journalist said. “She would report that FEMA was opening for the first time a place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center for people to get vaccinated. She wanted to get the message out especially to minorities and specifically to the most vulnerable which are immigrants.”

Photo Susan Calle

“She wanted to make Latino immigrants feel comfortable, to make them feel confident and the important thing, which is to get vaccinated. Those are details that one’s family has. Your mom can tell you, ‘baby, you must go to the doctor’. The Vice President shared that charisma with us, that she cared about us as a Latino community. And that particular detail that she was the one who looked for the media. Of course, she chose the one that people listen to the most. She was the one who chose and the only media was La Mega. What she talked about reached directly to the Latino community. Specifically about the importance of getting vaccinated and that immigrants should not be afraid, that they should go out and get the shot”.

A professional lesson

Professionalism is cultivated. The journalist’s profession is a craft. Its performance demands meticulous processes that should not be overlooked. María del Pilar Morales offered us a master class on that subject. Her words can serve as a guide for those who wish to become journalists.

“Once I knew the date and time, I got ready. I read a little bit more about her. I looked for details. It is always good when you are going to interview someone to know in-depth about the person you are going to talk to. We don´t know everything about her life just because she is the Vice President. I read a lot about her, I prepared some basic questions that anyone would ask a female vice-president”.

– Were you nervous?

– At the beginning, yes. A lot of people think I don’t get nervous, but that is not true. It’s a challenge. An interview with the vice president of the United States. It’s not like interviewing any ordinary person. And even more when there is a different language, but I think she gave me a lot of confidence. You feel the vibe and I forgot my impediment of not speaking fluent English, and we did very well. I felt like, ‘Oh well, I did it’. And she felt so comfortable. She was telling me, ‘Mary, Mary,’ and I felt that Kamala is like us. Exactly. No one is that high, no one is that low. When someone makes you feel equal, on the same level, that person is great. Because it’s not that she’s getting down, but she’s making you feel that ‘you are equal. That there’s nobody better than anybody else. So I felt great, really happy. After I was done, I was like, ‘I talked to the Vice President, oh my God!‘ I wanted to drink a bottle of champagne, but it was too early.”

A long telephone call

Our parents handed down to us a lapidary aphorism: “People many, persons few.” It belongs to Diogenes of Sinope, a Greek philosopher of 390 B.C. We all know about this particular human aura. We recognize it wherever it is.

You can read: Héctor Ayala: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is endemic in Philadelphia

Maria del Pilar noticed in Kamala Harris that difference. “She was supposed to have another interview and she would have only five minutes. But she went on and kept on talking comfortably. It was like talking to a friend. I was the one who said, ‘I know you have a meeting,’ because she kept talking. I had been warned that she had another appointment, that she was very busy, but she still didn’t mind the time and kept answering questions specifically from our Latino community.”

The communicator knows that an interview of this level is a great responsibility.. Photo Susan Calle

The journalist helped us understand the differences. “In these last elections, the Latinos made a big difference. Because when you want a change, you have to do your part. Especially her, who spoke in general. I don’t think she spoke only to the Democrats. She spoke to human beings. She insistently recommended getting vaccinated. She stressed the importance of vaccination. She asked everyone to go out and get vaccinated. That vaccine is there for everyone”.

An exciting experience

Kamala is like us. The statement has remained as a mantra in María del Pilar’s discursive ecosystem. Interviewing the Vice President “was a heavyweight. Many people think it is not. It is a responsibility. Because if I fail, they will not look at the 99 times I defended them, they will notice the only time I failed and that is very important”.

“And one other thing I want to clarify. Pennsylvania State was crucial for her vice presidency. She understood how important this state was and the non-voting community responded in her favor. I think the interview and her message were a way of saying thank you. Saying to us ‘get vaccinated I want you alive’. I don’t know if it was to vote for them again, but in the end, it’s a nice thing to have someone care about the community´s health.”

Diana Cortés

The first personality recognized was Diana Cortés who outstands as Philadelphia’s first Latina City Solicitor and is responsible for general counseling to the Mayor Administration and all city agencies, boards and commissions. She is a former litigator at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin P.C. Cortés is a graduate of Cornell University and Villanova University School of Law. She is also a member of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group.

In her speech, Diana revealed her deep pride in being Latina and the important role her family heritage has played in the consolidation of her roots. “They are a continuous inspiration to me,” she said.

Cortés also explained that the success in her professional performance as City Solicitor has been nurtured by the combination of proud for her cultural roots, hard work, perseverance and coraje. “If there is something valuable to work on, I will do that, but always remembering all my values, this Latina confidence has been essential all my life, in my career. In the words of my mother: You have to show them a Latina can do it, and even better.”

Damaris Feliciano

Damaris Feliciano was the next woman honored. She is currently the Director of Community Services and Strategic Initiatives and is responsible for establishing and supporting relationships between the community, non-government agencies and the City of Philadelphia. She also leads Mission Area 7 which mobilizes the community for the Philadelphia Resilience Project, a multi-pronged initiative established to address the opioid epidemic. Damaris holds a bachelor and master’s degree in business administration from Arcadia University.

Upon receiving her well-deserved recognition, Feliciano expressed her enthusiasm for being able to share this important moment with her colleagues. “It´s so nice to be here celebrating my colleagues and celebrating the Latinas,” she said.

Christina Hernández

Then came the participation of Christina Hernandez who is currently the Deputy Chief of Staff at the City of Philadelphia. She has a Bachelor´s Degree in History and Spanish from Penn State University and a Juris Doctor´s Degree from the James E. School of Law at Temple University.

Hernandez celebrated her recognition with an emotional statement that symbolizes the solid conformation of his identity: “I am Boricua,” she cried full of proud. The Deputy Chief added that she has worked hard for the skills and education that she acquired “for the benefits of my community, and to be recognized for that work is a tremendous honor.”

Irene Contreras

Irene Contreras was the last recognized personality of the evening, but it was impossible for her to assist to the reception. Contreras is currently the Director of Communication and Digital Engagement at the City of Philadelphia Managing Director’s Office and is responsible for the external communication plans and digital engagement strategies of Philly Counts. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a Master of Arts in Marketing and Advertisement from Universidad Santa María, Venezuela.

Despite the joy at this celebration of successful stories, it was inevitable to remember the difficult times the world has endured during the pandemic. Therefore, during the event, the memory and grief of the death of so many people was honored with a moment of respectful silence.

The meaning of “essential”

Ricardo Hurtado also had some words for the performance of the editorial group he represents. He pointed out that the evolution of the media product has been materialized thanks to the local inversion. With these remarks he introduced Lola Mananova, CEO of Aurora Home Care who stressed her feeling of gratitude toward the Latino community because it has “taught her a lot,” especially during the difficult recent times. “When people talk about essential businesses, for us it was just ´essential´, but this year we really understood how essential it can be. 98% of our employees are women and they serve, heroically every day, seniors, kids and families. I want to thank them for that a lot.”

For closing the event, the Hispanic Media CEO, invited the audience “to invest in the relationship that you have, make the community survive by what we are doing locally.”

The wall mural of LGBTQ activist and Latinx community icon Gloria Casarez was whitewashed Wednesday, 6abc Action News reported. The tribute to Philadelphia’s first director of LGBT affairs had adorned the former site of the 12th Street Gym in the Gayborhood since 2015. Casarez passed away in 2014 after a battle with breast cancer.

Casarez was an American civil rights leader and LGBT activist in Philadelphia. She served as Philadelphia’s first director of Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) affairs. During her tenure as director, Philadelphia ranked as the number one city nationwide for LGBT equality. Gloria Casarez served as the executive director of Gay and Lesbian Latino AIDS Education Initiative (GALAEI) from 1999–2008.

The painted white wall has many feeling angered near 12th Street in Center City. “I was really surprised and enraged,” said artist Michelle Angela-Ortiz, who created the mural.

The image of the Gloria Casarez mural was projected Wednesday night on the blank wall with the banner that says, “You can’t erase our history.”

NO MORE MURAL: Outrage in Center City tonight after mural of beloved LGBTQ activist and Latinx community icon, Gloria Casarez was suddenly painted over by a developer set to demolish the building.

“That’s all I’ve known since I moved to the city and I look at it now and it’s just sad,” said resident Hayley Roberts.

Past fall, once it was known that the site had been sold to New York City developer Midwood Investment and Development, many residents wondered about the mural’s fate. Some even protested to ensure the mural would be preserved before the site was torn down.

Planning involving multiple parties including Mural Arts Philadelphia led to the decision of a new tribute that would feature Gloria Casarez and Henry Minton, a leading Black abolitionist who once lived in the same location.

You can read: Six local businesses were closed in Pennsylvania for defying indoor dinning shutdown

In an initial joint statement, Midwood and Mural Arts announced their partnership to commission the new installation. However, out of nowhere, the mural was painted over Wednesday.

Unexpected development

“After this unexpected development, we cannot in good conscience move forward,” said Jane Golden, the executive director of Mural Arts Philadelphia.

Golden said though it was understood the building and mural were going away, how it was done is really a major problem.

“When they go away, they have to go away with sensitivity and respect and we have to have time to mourn and acknowledge it,” she explained.

Angela-Ortiz is standing with others in the community expressing outrage. Ortiz said she still has no plans to work with Midwood in the future. Her priority now is honoring Gloria and Minton and all that they stood for.

“Even though this mural has been whitewashed, her history is not gone,” Ortiz said.

Puedes leer: The time for Open Enrollment is now!

The Latina Summit 2020 conferences had a fitting closing with a presentation on the COVID-19 coronavirus, an online event organized by Hispanic Media with the support of Independence Blue Cross.

The Understanding COVID-19 presentation was given by Elly Maldonado, Nursing and Wellspan Health System and Adjunct Facility at PA College of Health Sciences for Penn Med LGH will try to answer. Lissy G, El Sol Latino’s Digital Host was the moderator.

Maldonado spoke about her experience as a coronavirus survivor and offered advice to the audience as COVID-19 cases have re-emerged in Philadelphia and the United States.

During her work during the pandemic, Maldonado has lived difficult experiences. One of the most emotional moments she had was with a Latino from New York who moved to Philadelphia.

“This Latino’s whole family got COVID-19. His daughter’s husband died; his son died,” she lamented.

In these times it is crucial to understand the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic that changed the daily dynamics of the country and the world.

More than 12 million cases and at least 250,000 deaths have been reported in the United States.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 59,256,310 people have been infected worldwide. In total, nearly 1.4 million people have died.

Maldonado recommended to be tested again for coronavirus within 3 months, once the infection curve has dropped.

In the conversation with Lissy G, Maldonado described what she experienced after she got COVID-19, after going to a gathering with her husband at a friend’s house.

“I didn’t have a fever, just a congested nose, but I thought it was because of the weather. The entire family tested positive for COVID-19. That Saturday I attended classes. My students and I wore masks. On Monday I tested positive. I had no sense of taste or smell,” she recalled.

She immediately collapsed in bed. On Tuesday her son took her to hospital where she was nebulized. “By Friday I couldn’t breathe anymore,” she said.

Elly Maldonado thanked the nurses. While she was in the Intensive Care Unit she was treated with “great” care.

Most major U.S. cities, including Philadelphia, have announced the return of coronavirus restrictions implemented early in the pandemic, but relaxed as the number of COVID-19 cases was brought under control.

Maldonado is aware that prevention is crucial. Failure to take action to prevent the spread could lead to more deaths and a crisis in the hospital system that could be surpassed by increased coronavirus contagion.

Successful cycle of conferences

The Latina Summit 2020 conference cycle began on November 13 with the presentation Open Enrollment by Raúl Aquino, representing IBX, who explained the benefits of having good health insurance.

Yvette Peña, Vice president and Multicultural Leader at AARP, continued the session discussing the term Latin X and its relevance to the Hispanic community.

On November 20, Dr. Jabal Uffelman, MD from RejuvChip, was in charge of explaining during the Latina Wellness presentation the benefits of physical well-being to stay young and energetic.

Then, four successful women: Madeline Neris Negron, Founder MARI-SAL’S; Jazmín DeJesus, Emerging Founder & Managing Market Mentor at MONAT; Jennifer Gómez Hardy, President Hispanic Bar Association of Philadelphia; and Lola Harper, Deputy Commerce Director, Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunity, told their entrepreneurship stories at Latinas in Business.

The second session of Latina Summit 2020 brought together successful women who discussed the importance of the presence of Latina women in business in the United States. It was approached from the experience of four entrepreneurs in different fields: fashion, law, management, public administration jobs and food.

The conference Latinas in Business organized by Hispanic Media with the support of Independence Blue Cross was led by Jazmin de Jesus, Jennifer Gomez, Iola Harper, Madeline Neris Negron. It was moderated by Lissy G.

Each of these successful women has overcome significant obstacles to get where they are. Madeline Neris Negron is the founder of Mari-Sal’s and the newest in the business, but she is an example of success during the pandemic, as her food business grew exponentially.

“I am devoted to the culinary area. I used to use products from other brands until I decided to create my own spices. I do everything with joy and love,” she admitted.

Even Lissy G, in her role as moderator, had a story to tell. Last December she opened a restaurant, but in March, due to the COVID-19, she had to close. The successful women shared their adversities during this difficult time, but they have emphasized having a support system or have acknowledged the need to reinvent themselves, because when you depend on yourself, you look for opportunities to overcome challenges.

Jazmin DeJesus said that from March to July her business, which is based on beauty, hair and face care, closed due to restrictions. With this second wave of coronavirus, DeJesus is facing another closure, however, she was able to prepare herself a little better using a digital perspective. Her business has shifted to a virtual window; however, it is still a challenge.

“In the past, I wouldn’t have thought about taking a chance on having my own business and I was very involved in my regular jobs. Then I started dividing my time with my business until I dedicated it 100%,” explained the emerging Founder and Managing Market Mentor at MONAT.

Jennifer Gomez, another member of these successful women who works in the legal area, talked about the experience of balancing work and life or personal time. “I feel that when you are starting out you don’t have a balance. She also said that when she started her business she had many things in mind: phone number, logo, website, so she started organizing her business before leaving her regular job.

“I am currently working for an independent law firm. I remember that I quit on a Friday to create my own business and I did it with the logo, the web, everything ready. It’s very important to have this foundation to start with,” added the President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania.

Iola Harper, Philadelphia’s Deputy Director of Business-Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunity advised women who want to start a business to build relationships with organizations, their bankers, other businesses and to start with logos, websites, business cards and details that are important when starting. “Women by nature know about marketing,” she insisted.

“There is a Christmas commercial where different professionals come together to make baskets regardless of their positions because in the end it creates a bond that is teamwork,” Harper said.

Dr. Jabal Uffelman MD, from Rejuvchip continued Friday Nov. 20 Latina Summit 2020 specialized online presentations supported by Independence Blue Cross, a leading health insurance organization in the region.

Uffelman spoke to the audience and moderator Eugene Martinez about the world of physical well-being in order to stay young and energetic. Mercy Mosquera, who owns several Philadelphia businesses, was present at the conference. She is Ecuadorian and part of the Latino community in the United States.

For Dr. Uffelman, keeping young is the result of combining several things: eating healthy, exercising, leading a peaceful life, taking supplements, and of course joining the Rejuvchip family.

“Our treatment consists of a chip that is placed at the level of the buttocks. Then, it is recommended that women do not exercise for three days and one day in the case of men,” said the doctor.

Adults who wish to age gracefully with optimal facial aesthetics and sexual well-being can access exceptional treatments and services.

These include Rejuvshot, a sexual injection of platelet-rich plasma, and Rejuvwave, a men’s sexual wellness treatment that uses acoustic waves to help rebuild penile blood vessels.

” After a certain age testosterone ceases to be produced as a result of aging. But with our treatment this can be improved,” added Dr. Uffelman. “In the case of women, this chip increases sexual desire. Its effect begins to be noticed two weeks after it is implanted.

Dr. Jabal Uffelman is the primary physician at Rejuvchip and has meritorious academic qualifications in aesthetic and anti-aging medicine. He attended the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida, where he earned his medical degree.
